A practical framework to move beyond performance, align with your purpose and create a more meaningful everyday.
From Want to Purpose: A Simple Life Purpose Philosophy
A practical framework to move beyond performance, align with your purpose and create a more meaningful everyday.
There is a quiet moment when a person's life begins to change. It rarely starts with a big decision. It usually starts with a simple sentence:
"I want…"
I want a better life.
I want a healthier body.
I want more free time.
I want to live with more meaning.
We often underestimate how powerful that one sentence can be.
Want: The spark of awareness
Want is the starting point of awareness. It is light, like a passing thought, or like a soft knock from deep inside your heart. Many people dismiss their wants as unrealistic, especially if they were raised in environments that valued hard work, survival and sacrifice over self-discovery and wellbeing.
But every real transformation begins with "I want." If you do not even allow yourself to want, it becomes very hard to step into a new version of your life. You keep running the same script, even when a quieter, more honest part of you is asking for something different.
So the first act of change is not courage. It is not action. It is honesty.
Can I admit to myself what I truly want, underneath all the roles I am performing?
Dream: Giving your future a picture
Over time, want slowly evolves into a dream.
A dream is what happens when we give our "I want" a picture. It is not just a sentence anymore; it becomes an image of the future you would love to step into. A dream carries colour, emotion and hope.
Dreams show us that life is not just about repeating today. We can also design tomorrow. When you start to dream, you begin to:
- See new possibilities
- Feel a reason to get up and try again
- Find energy to learn, experiment and grow, even after setbacks
A dream makes us willing to work, to study, to fall down and stand up again. It is the fuel behind many of our boldest decisions.
But if a dream stays only at the level of "I want," it can still be shattered by reality. One disappointment, one failure, one difficult year — and the dream can feel naive, fragile or too far away. To walk further, we need more than a dream. We need a purpose.
Purpose: The deeper why that carries you
Purpose sits deeper than a dream.
A dream often asks, "What do I want to become?" Purpose asks, "Why do I want to become this person?" Dreams are about desire. Purpose is about direction.
Dreams are often centred around me:
- "I want to be successful."
- "I want financial freedom."
- "I want to be healthier."
Purpose extends beyond me to the people and world around me:
- "I want my success to bring light to others."
- "I want my financial freedom to create safety and opportunity for my family or community."
- "I want my health so I can have the energy to love, lead and serve in a bigger way."
Purpose is the difference between running after goals and walking a path with meaning.
Dream redesigns reality. Purpose anchors it.
For me, a dream is not an escape from reality; it is a way to redesign reality. But purpose is what anchors that new design into everyday life.
Purpose is not a slogan we print on a wall. It is a life direction that gets tested and proven in the choices you make under pressure, the habits you practise when no one is watching, and the way you treat yourself and others when things are hard.
You can have many wants. You can have beautiful dreams. But what truly carries you through the valleys — the financial stress, the family conflict, the health scares, the career changes — is purpose.
Because purpose reminds you that you are not living only to get something. You are living to become someone, to contribute something, and to awaken something in yourself and in others.
A Philosophy, Not a Performance
I work with many high-achieving people — parents, leaders, entrepreneurs and young professionals — who have done everything right on paper. They have ticked the boxes: study, job, family, house.
And yet, somewhere in their forties or even their twenties, a quiet question arrives: "I did everything they told me I should do. Why do I still feel like something is missing?"
This is where purpose becomes essential. Purpose is not about chasing more achievements. It is about shifting the question from "How can I do more?" to "Why does this truly matter to me, and who does it help me become?"
This is why, in my work, I talk about purpose over performance. Performance focuses on results alone. Purpose asks whether those results are actually aligned with the life you want to live and the human you want to be — for yourself, your children, your team and your community.
The Simple Progression: Want, Dream, Purpose
You do not have to figure out your life purpose in one dramatic moment. It can grow step by step. Think of it as a gentle progression:
- Want – I allow myself to notice what I long for.
- Dream – I give that longing a picture and a story.
- Purpose – I discover the deeper why behind that story, and who I can uplift along the way.
Want
ignites awareness
Dream
ignites hope
Purpose
ignites life
Bringing It Into Your Life
If you want to put this philosophy into practice, you might start with just one honest question:
What is one "I want…" that I have been afraid to admit, even to myself?
From there, you can gently explore: If that want became a dream, what would the picture of my future look like?
When I look deeper, what is the purpose underneath that dream? Who else benefits if this dream becomes real?
You don't need to change everything overnight. Just begin aligning your daily steps with a deeper why.
You are not here just to survive your to-do list. You are here to live a life that feels honest, meaningful and awake.
Glow Together, Grow Together
First, allow yourself to want. Then, dare to dream. Finally, refine your dream into a clear purpose that can carry you through both sunshine and storm.
Because want will wake you up, dream will lift your eyes, and purpose will keep your heart steady as you walk.
Together, we can glow together and grow together — one honest want, one brave dream, and one purposeful step at a time.
With happiness,
