What Is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised massage technique that uses rhythmic, feather-light strokes to support the movement of lymph fluid through your body's natural drainage pathways. The pressure is barely greater than the weight of a coin on your skin.

It is not a deep tissue or remedial massage. It targets the superficial lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin, directing fluid toward your lymph nodes where it can be naturally processed. Each session follows a specific sequence, beginning at the neck and collarbone to open the primary drainage pathways before working through the body.

At Wonderlab, our therapists are certified in MLD and adapt every session to your body, your comfort level and your health goals.

Benefits of Regular Lymphatic Drainage for Men and Women

Lymphatic drainage supports your body's natural processes. Regular sessions may help with a range of common health and wellness goals.

Supports Fluid Movement

Encourages lymph fluid to move through your body's drainage pathways, which may help reduce the feeling of puffiness, bloating and water retention.

Deep Relaxation

The gentle, rhythmic technique activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting a state of calm that many clients describe as deeply restorative.

Post-Exercise Recovery

Supports the body's natural recovery after training by encouraging fluid movement and helping to clear metabolic waste from muscle tissue.

Skin Health and Tone

May support healthier-looking skin by encouraging circulation and fluid movement, which can help reduce puffiness and promote a fresher appearance.

Stress and Tension Relief

The calming nature of MLD may help reduce the physical tension that accumulates during periods of high stress, poor sleep or long work hours.

Better Sleep Quality

Many clients report improved sleep after lymphatic drainage sessions, likely due to the deep relaxation response and reduced physical discomfort.

Lymphatic Drainage During Menopause

Menopause brings significant hormonal changes that can affect how your body manages fluid, inflammation and stress. Many women notice increased bloating, puffiness, joint stiffness and changes in skin texture during perimenopause and menopause.

Lymphatic drainage massage may offer meaningful support during this transition:

  • Fluid retention and bloating — Hormonal fluctuations can cause your body to hold more fluid. MLD supports fluid movement, which may help reduce the feeling of heaviness and abdominal bloating.
  • Skin changes — Declining oestrogen affects skin hydration and elasticity. Improved circulation from regular MLD may support healthier-looking skin.
  • Joint comfort — Fluid congestion around joints can contribute to stiffness. MLD may help reduce this and improve comfort during movement.
  • Stress and sleep — Menopause often disrupts sleep and increases stress. The deep relaxation response from MLD may support better rest and a calmer nervous system.
  • Hot flushes and temperature regulation — While MLD does not directly treat hot flushes, the overall calming effect on the nervous system may help some women feel more balanced.

Many of our female clients book regular lymphatic drainage as part of their wellness routine through perimenopause and beyond. Your therapist can recommend a session frequency that suits your body and your symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is lymphatic drainage massage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic massage technique that uses very light pressure to support lymph fluid movement through your body's drainage pathways. It targets superficial lymphatic vessels just beneath the skin and is not a deep tissue or remedial treatment.

How often should I book a session?

For general wellness, every 2 to 4 weeks is common. For post-surgery recovery, 2 to 3 sessions per week may be recommended. For menopause-related fluid retention, weekly or fortnightly sessions may be helpful. Your therapist will recommend a plan after your first session.

Is lymphatic drainage suitable for men?

Yes. Lymphatic drainage is suitable for both men and women. Men benefit from MLD for post-exercise recovery, fluid retention, post-surgery support, stress reduction and general wellness. The technique is adapted to each individual's body and comfort level.

Can lymphatic drainage help during menopause?

Many women find lymphatic drainage helpful during menopause. Hormonal changes can contribute to fluid retention, bloating and puffiness. MLD may support fluid movement, reduce the feeling of heaviness, and promote relaxation during this transition.
