6 DIET DOS AND DON’TS FOR PREVENTING ACNE

August 22, 2021

Acne is something many of us struggle with for extensive periods in our lives. Luckily, with the advancement of technology, we are better equipped now than ever to treat it. In this blogpost, we will cover the 6 dos and don'ts for preventing acne. Taking care of your skin begins on the inside, and we have extensive blog posts talking about what foods you should eat. Remember, that following a routine is another way you can boost your skin health. If you have any of your own tips, make sure to share them in our Wonderlab community.

  1. Do not eat foods with a high glycaemic index.

Foods with a high glycaemic index such as processed carbohydrates have been linked with acne. These include white bread, russet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and other foods containing refined carbs and sugars can rapidly spike blood super levels. This sudden increase in blood sugar triggers an increase in inflammation and causes skin to produce more oil. This additional oil on the skin can block pores and leads to acne. Fortunately, not all carbohydrates create this reaction. As a result, it is a good idea to switch your white bread and rice for whole grain or brown alternatives. These both have a lower glycaemic index, are higher in fibre, and help slow the blood sugar spikes.

  1. Do eat healthy fatty foods such as fish.

One of the best ways to avoid acne is to eat a non-inflammatory diet. Contrary to popular belief, eating some fatty foods can create a positive impact on your acne. While acne is generally caused by inflammation of the skin, not all fats cause inflammation. Healthy fats such as fats that come from salmon, flaxseed, walnuts, and chia seeds can create the opposite effect. They ensure your body receives all the necessary nutrition and vitamins for healthy skin. Unhealthy fats include artificial trans fats and most fats that come from dairy, fast food, and commercial baked goods.

3. Do not drink milk or other dairy products.

Several studies have found the link between consuming dairy products and the increase of acne. It has been found to be the case because dairy releases insulin and growth factors within the body. These contribute to acne breakouts. Dairy also contains a large amount of fat that adds to the inflammation in the skin. In addition to milk proteins that are responsible for acne, there are also hormones within milk that are precursors to testosterone. These combined with protein trigger acne.

  1. Do consume nuts.

Nuts are one of the world’s best superfoods. Not only are they high in omega-3 fatty acids that fight inflammation, but they also contain large amounts of zinc. Zinc is an anti-inflammatory as it helps reduce the levels of bacteria that cause acne. In addition, zinc may also decrease sebum production. Eating nuts can ensure you receive an adequate amount of zinc in your diet. You can also pair this with some zinc-based skincare products that can boost your skin health.

5. Do consume green vegetables.

One of the best foods to decrease inflammation in the body, are antioxidant rich green vegetables. Most fruit and vegetables are packed with nutrients that help your internal health in many ways. Foods such as brightly coloured fruits, berries, spinach, and Asian greens are packed with antioxidants. These can help fight free radicals and oxidative stress within the body. Both aspects can help calm down the signs of acne.

  1. Do not eat oily and deep-fried foods.

It is best to limit unhealthy saturated and trans fats for your overall health just as much as for your acne. Deep friend and oily foods have high amounts of these fats and can trigger inflammation in your body. While it is true that avoiding fatty foods is not going to immediately clean up your skin, your overall health will be helped by avoiding such staples in your diet. Clogged pores aside, keeping your arteries and blood systems inside your body free from unnecessary fat build up is essential for a healthy life.
