What to look for when buying Vitamin C for your skincare regimen?

Vitamin C is good for our health. We all know that getting fruits and vegetables packed with vitamin C helps fight off the flu and keeps our bodies functioning normally. What has only relatively recently hit the skincare market, is the importance of boosting vitamin C on our skin. Just like it nourishes our body, when applied onto the skin, it nourishes it! It can boost your skin health and leave you with a glowing and vibrant complexion.

Why is vitamin C important in skincare?

Vitamin C is a chemical named ascorbic acid that naturally occurs in the skin. It plays a role in collagen production and helps heal acne, keep the skin hydrated, and protect it from UV radiation. It can however be difficult to deliver vitamin C to your skin.

There are so many options for Vitamin C serums, that it can be hard to distinguish what the best one for your needs is. Check some of these out.

What to look for in your Vitamin C serum

  1. Ask for Ascorbic Acid

While there are many Vitamin C derivatives ascorbic acid is the best option. It is proven to be the best in supporting collagen production, maintaining the physical barrier, and protecting it from free radicals.

  1. Keep an eye out on the concentration

The maximum skin absorption occurs at 20% concentration of Ascorbic Acid. Counter intuitively, higher concentrations have less absorption and can be more irritating. If you experience irritation, consider opting for lower concentrations at around 10%.

  1. How much water?

Ascorbic Acid will begin to oxide in contact with water. For this reason, it is a good idea to choose a product where water is not one of the first ingredients. This will ensure that the product will really work. Choose serums rather than cream-based products. There are still good products which include water; however, those require stabilizing agents to ensure the vitamin C will reach your skin.

  1. Look for a low pH

Ascorbic Acid is unstable once above a 3.5pH. This is why a product low in pH is the best option. Low pH also means there is a smaller amount of water in the formula, giving your skin the best treatment.

  1. What is the packaging?

Vitamin C will lose its potency when exposed to light and aid. For this reason, opt for sealed packaging such as a pump bottle. Preferably with a dark class to create a barrier against the light.
